There are basically four franchise business arrangements.  They are:-

1. A product franchise which is an arrangement whereby a distributor acts as an outlet, either wholesale, retail or otherwise for the product of a manufacturer often on terms that give the distributor the exclusive right to sell the product within a specific market.  The franchises of this nature are common, for example, in retail, motor vehicles and petrol.
2. A systems franchise is an arrangement where a Franchisor develops a unique method of doing business and permits the Franchisee to use its system, in a controlled fashion, in the operation of the Franchisee’s independently owned business.  Examples of industries where franchises of this nature are common are fast food outlets, laundries, dry cleaners and motels.  Sometimes the Franchisor provides only the trade name and the pattern or formula of the business.  In other cases the Franchisee is required to sell goods or services provided by the Franchisor.
3. A processing or manufacturing franchise is an arrangement whereby the Franchisor provides an essential ingredient or know how to a processor or manufacturer.  Franchises of this nature are common for example in the soft drink industry.
4. A further category is a trademark or brand name franchise whereby the Franchisor simply provides a right to a Franchise to use the trademark or business name of the Franchisor in association with the sale or manufacture of goods or services.
