Income protection (or Total and Temporary Disability) insurance is insurance to cover your income if you are unable to work temporarily because of a medical reason. If you have income protection insurance and can’t work, you may be eligible to receive a monthly benefit for a set period of time that pays up to 75% of your gross income.
For Income Protection claims you need to show that you cannot currently do your job, you are under the care of a doctor, and that you’re not working for a wage or income.
Policies vary enormously in terms of how much money you will receive and for how long. The definition of being unable to work also varies, with some policies paying a benefit when you are unable to perform your usual job, while others only pay when you cannot perform any occupation for which you are suited based on your education, training or experience.
